What is a good kind of shoe that works good in casual and semi-formal settings for a younger guy? Sneakers?
If you could also recommend a good kind of sneaker that goes well with different things and situations, I'd appreciate it.
Many people have the exact same concern / question. I know I did when younger and still do today. First let me say I see two reasons to this:
1) You are looking for comfort. This is why I do it.
2) You are looking it as a fashion statement of mixing the casual with the formal.
If you look around you'll find photos of many stars wearing sneakers with formal attire (suits, tux, and even tails). These stars are not DUMB!!
How can you pull it off? First it depends upon what you are trying to do / say. If you are doing it for comfort then my personal comments will help you. On the other hand if you are doing as a statement, then looking at stars and others saying the same thing will help you.
I suspect by your question you are looking for comfort.
My "secret" to successfully pulling this off at work, evening out at a concert, Church, etc is to choose a pair of sneakers that pass for dress unless you look very closely.
The sneakers I typically use are a pair of Black monochrome Vans slip-on or #95 Era. Black monochrome means everything is BLACK, the uppers (canvas or leather), the rubber sides, and yes even the sole can be Black or a Brown. It looks especially good - IMHO - when the sneaker's material is LEATHER (not canvas).
There are lots of sneakers beside Vans that look like dress shoes. I've worn Men's Keds, Vans, Converse Skid Grip, and yes even Chucks!
I just make sure the sneakers match the clothing and they don't stand out. In this case, WHITE IS THE ENEMY as it stands out and yells SNEAKER, except in one case - when you are wearing White head to toe!!
On the other hand, if your pants or outfit is lighter in color then a cream or beige sneaker is a good choice.
